Before You Follow

⋆I am 25+ years old. If you don't feel comfortable following, please don't feel pressured to.
⋆Adding on to the previous point, I may talk about or post NSFW content on side account (mainly my ship account). Minors please do not follow my side accounts.
⋆If you're looking for people to follow based on fandoms, I suggest following others instead. I'm not really in any fandoms aside from Sound Horizon.
⋆I'm not shy about my own feelings and beliefs, but I'm open to discuss it if you feel the need to.
⋆I ship a lot, and I will post shipping content freely on my personal account and my ship account.
⋆If you aren't comfortable with my ships for personal reasons, feel free to unfollow.
⋆If you have concerns about my ships, you're more than welcomed to approach me about it.
*I don't believe in the whole "fiction doesn't affect reality" argument, it's oversimplification. Don't try to force your own perspective onto others trying to justify your own way of thinking
⋆I don't follow back automatically. Honestly, don't expect anything from me
⋆That said, you're free to talk to me. I don't guarantee replies because I may be busy and miss your message, or have nothing to add.

Brief Background on the Band

The band’s leader and only actual member is Revo, whom we call king regrettably. The first album Chronicle is the only album without vocals for the songs, but was later revamped into Chronicle 2nd with additional songs. Some of the stories in Chronicle have also been rewritten/expanded on, while others remain the same so it is still important to understand both!Aramary sang from Thanatos to Elysion as the primary vocal (with Jimang in some roles starting in Lost), but from Roman onward, she left the band and Revo took the position of the lead. Also after Elysion, we start to see more members join the albums. For the purpose of this manual, I won’t go into detail on all of the members, but definitely look them up if you get the chance! The fandom itself is called the Sound Horizon Kingdom, and we call the fans (citizens) Laurants. Well, it does give off a strange aura at first, but we kinda go with it. It’s also very cool that the Laurants perform the last song of every concert, the Sound Horizon Kingdom’s anthem.Currently, although the 9th album is out, the 8th isn’t! We’re eagerly (kinda) waiting for the 8th (REVOOOOOOOOO).

Stories

First of all, Sound Horizon’s stories aren’t quite conventional, but if you just want to enjoy the music and take the stories at face value, that’s ok too!!!Sound Horizon’s albums and singles all have stories that tie back to one another in a number of ways. There are also really prominent themes in the stories, which all tie back together across the horizons. For the purpose of this manual, I won’t elaborate on the themes or theories, since you will probably get more out of them by interacting with the songs themselves. Revo also likes reusing bits and parts of chord progressions and melodies to tie the stories together. The songs also deal with a lot of triggering subjects, like death, sexual assault, suicide, etc. So please be aware and be mindful of your comfort zone before looking into the content. That being said, when you first start out listening, you’ll definitely miss some references to other albums and songs, so you’ll probably end up listening to the albums many times if you want to understand the bigger picture.Eventually, as you get more into the songs and stories, you’ll probably understand more about the reoccurring themes and characters, but again it’s fine to just love the music.

Recommendations

This is out of personal bias, but IdoIdo/Marchen is a pretty good starting point. IdoIdo is a 3 song prologue foretelling the events that lead up to Marchen. The album’s individual songs are sound horizon retellings of classic fairy tales, so it might make understanding the story through songs easier. We have stories like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty (and for those who know me, a very charismatic prince). Of course, some stories are more obvious than others, but I think it does help you ease into how Sound Horizon tells its stories. You definitely don’t have to start here though!

Moira, the 6th, is mostly one continuous story throughout its individual songs. I know a lot of my friends really like Moira for its storytelling style, so if it sounds more attractive to you, then definitely check it out! Again, personal bias, but I adore the Moira concert. 10/10 would recommend :) The first album that I got super into was Roman, the 5th, so it doesn’t really matter where you start branching out.

Seisen no Iberia might also be a good way to ease into things, since it’s a single with no (current) direct ties to the bigger album stories. It’s only 3 songs (that we know of), so you can get the story faster than compared to an 11 song album.

EmaNegai came out as a bluray visual novel-esque thing so it’s kinda hard to get to right now. There are digital downloads too...but you have to buy the different paths separately and there's a lot of repeated songs, so it's not something that I can really recommend either lol. There’s a mobile app for the prologue version at least...?

I do recommend saving Nein for last, or at least not starting with it. Nein revisits the older albums and stories for its own story, so you might not actually understand it to its full extent without understanding the original stories. However, if you don’t mind the callbacks without knowing the original tracks, it’s still a great album to get into! The concert is a lot of fun, but if you watch it, please be aware that there are a lot of flashing colors and lights!

Closing Remarks

Even though I’ve been talking about the later albums a lot, and the manga/novel adaptations do make them more accessible and more easy to understand, I can’t stress enough that the first albums (the doujin albums) are important! Personally, I can’t stress enough how important Pico Magic and Pico Magic Reloaded are, because it sets the stage for so many important things.Other than that, I don’t have much to say. This is just an overview, so it doesn’t address the actual themes and story meanings. Again, for those, it’s better to actually listen to the songs and read through the stories than just listening to someone else’s theories.Of course, you can always ask around if you get really Lost or just want to explore the ideas with other people. There are more Laurants than you’re aware of :))))))) (save us)P.S. don’t get into sound horizon
